Obituary for Theresa E. Shomphe (MacDougall)

Theresa E. Shomphe (MacDougall)
Of Waltham, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday morning November 15th, 2016 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 72.

Born on March 2, 1944 in Washabuck, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia; daughter of the late Michael Rory and Rita (LaRusic) MacDougall, Theresa was raised in Canada and came to the Boston area in 1963 and resided in Waltham for almost 50 years. Although Waltham was truly her home where she raised her family, Theresa spent the winter months at Lake Highlander in Dunedin, Florida and the summers in her hometown of Washabuck, Cape Breton.

Theresa had been employed as a Real Estate Broker in Waltham from the early 1980’s until she retired in 2006. In addition to real estate she devoted many hours to volunteering for the American Cancer Society. She had a strong faith in God and was an active and devoted member of Saint Joseph’s Parish Community in Waltham. She was a member of the Saint Joseph’s Women’s Guild as well as the French American Victory Club’s Ladies Auxiliary. She loved spending time with her family, celebrating many special occasions, watching her children and grandchildren live their lives and making sure they knew how proud “Grammie” was of them. In addition, she enjoyed playing bingo and cards, traveling, and having a good cup of tea with friends.

She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years Daniel J. Shomphe, her devoted and loving children Jeanette Causey and her husband Matt of Englewood, Colorado; William Shomphe and his wife Kelly of Chelmsford; Karen Barry and her husband George of Waltham; and Lori Vienneau and her husband Jeff of Burlington; her cherished grandchildren Jessica, Jack and Luke Shomphe, Hanna and Connor Barry, and Ryan, Avery and Tyler Vienneau. Theresa is also survived by her dear siblings Patrice Doiron (Simon), Mary Talbot, Leo MacDougall (Edie), Catherine Stewart (Len), Louise Whalen (Dave), Michelle MacNeil (Michael Dan), Ernie MacDougall, Margaret Thompson (Kevin), Lucy Charlene MacNeil (Dan Joseph), Dan E MacDougall (Cindy). She was a special Aunt Tishy to numerous nieces, nephews and leaves behind many close friends. Also surviving are uncles Ignatius LaRusic (Jill) and Joe LaRusic (Liz) and many cousins. She is also survived by sister-in-law Iola Shomphe, brother-in-law Leonard Buckles (Barb), sister-in-law Dauphine (Tony) and sister-in-law Angela.

She was predeceased by an infant brother Ernest Anthony, parents-in-law Elizabeth and John Buckles, brother-in-law Ernest Shomphe, brother-in-law Michael Talbot, and sister-in-law Stella Aucoin.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Funeral Services in celebration of Theresa’s Life from the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco & Sons Memorial, 773 Moody Street, WALTHAM on Saturday morning Nov. 19th at 9:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham. Visiting Hours will be held in the Mary Catherine Chapel on Friday Nov. 18th from 4 – 8 p.m. Parking attendants on duty.

A celebration of Theresa’s life will also be planned in Cape Breton in the summer of 2017.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Newton – Wellesley Hospital Vernon Cancer Center, 2014 Washington St, Newton, MA 02462.
