Obituary for Arthur Robert McKinnon

Arthur R. McKinnon of Waltham, age 83, suddenly and tragically passed away May 13, 2016, surrounded by his loving family, due to injuries sustained after being struck by a car.

Arthur spent 9 years in the United States Army. He joined the Army in May of 1949 and was stationed in Marburg, Germany. While on assignment in Europe, he traveled throughout Germany, France, Denmark, and Austria. He was honorably discharged in 1958, ending his service in Alaska.

Upon his return home in August 1958, he married the love of his life, Lois, and they started their beautiful life and family together. Arthur went on to work for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier until his retirement in December 1989. Following his retirement from the USPS, Arthur worked at Panametrics in Waltham, retiring when the company moved to Billerica.

At the time of his death, Arthur was still working. Arthur worked at RTN Federal Credit Union and D&L Liquors (Dion’s Liquors), both in Waltham. Even though people may not have known Arthur by name, they knew who he was. Whether you were a Waltham resident, worked alongside him, were one of the people he frequently saw on his errands to the bank, the grocery store, or even the pool supply store, he made a lasting impact on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. If he knew you well, and even if he didn’t know you, he had no reservations about having a conversation with you about anything and everything.

Arthur was very proud of his Scottish heritage and tracing the genealogy of his ancestors. Aside from the joy and pride he found in learning about his lineage, Arthur’s hobbies included harness horse racing, as he owned several horses over the years; volunteering with Waltham Boy Scout Troop 73; serving as an umpire for the Waltham Little League; recreational flying and taking lessons towards attaining his private pilot’s license; his enthusiasm and dedication to the newspaper crossword puzzles; his keep of an extensive vegetable garden, as there was always an abundance of tomatoes; and the overall upkeep of his home and property. During the summer months, Arthur could be found up on a ladder painting his house, or in the backyard tending to the pool, which was a staple at his home for more than 30 years.

Even in his 84th year, Arthur was as vibrant and witty as ever. He was always quick with a joke and never failed to tell us about how young everyone thought he was, and more importantly, how many women wanted to date him, with which he would reply, “I have to go home and ask my wife first.” Arthur was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, and enjoyed watching the games with Lois throughout the seasons. Arthur lived for his family and his cherished grandchildren. In his own charismatic fashion, Arthur took great delight in telling stories of his past. He had a great amount of wisdom, laughs, and tales to share. Arthur was a devoted family man, a hard worker, but most importantly, he was a friend to all.

Arthur is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Lois A. (Reilly) McKinnon; his loving children, Daniel McKinnon and his wife Bonnie (Trainor) of Franklin, Virginia Coen of Framingham, and Roger McKinnon and his wife Dena (Duffy) of Framingham; his cherished grandchildren, Jessie Lee (McKinnon) Sampsel and her husband Patrick of Idaho, and Molly, Jake, Cassie, and Drew McKinnon all of Framingham; and his adored cousin Janet Garland of Reading.

He is also survived by his brother Roger McKinnon and his wife Polly of NH, John McKinnon and his wife Helen of ME; and preceded in death by his siblings, Charles, Donald, James, Dorothy, and Florence.

He is also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as countless friends.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Service at the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco & Sons, 773 Moody St., Waltham, Friday at 11 a.m. Interment, Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham. Visiting hours, Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Parking attendants on duty.
