Of Waltham, entered eternal life in the loving arms of her God at 12:30 am on July 3rd, 2015 at the Maristhill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Waltham after a long illness at the age of 96.
Born on January 23, 1919 and raised in Lawrence, MA, Sister was the daughter of the late Adelard Berube and Anna (Frechette) Berube. Sister was from a family of seven children, three boys, and four girls of whom all are deceased.
Sister Jeannette made her profession in the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary in Bedford, MA on February 2, 1940. She set sail for Australia that same year where she trained as a licensed practical nurse, specializing in obstetrics and infant welfare. She then remained in Australia, serving at the TB hospital in Killara until the end of the War in the Pacific.
From 1948 until 1971, Sister Jeannette served as a nurse in many of the more isolated places in the Solomon Islands including Avuavu, Malaita, Visale, Takwa, and Tangarare. She became fluent in the Gari language.
Returning the USA in 1971, Sr. Jeannette gained her license as a practical nurse at Youville Hospital. She was on compassionate leave in Lawrence, MA from 1973 to 1978 caring for her elderly parents. She served as a nurse at Maristhill Nursing home from 1978 to1984. In later years she continued to volunteer there.
Sr. Jeannette went to live at the Marillac Residence in Wellesley Hills in 2005 and continued to be active, visiting those in the nursing home and enjoyed going out bowling with friends.Gradually her health failed and she was admitted to Maristhill as a resident on April 2nd 2015.
Sister Jeannette is survived by loving family members, friends and her Community of Marist Missionary Sisters, all of whom will miss her caring presence.
Relatives & Friends are respectfully invited to attend a Mass of the Resurrection in celebration of Sister Jeannette’s life at the Marist Missionary Sisters Residence, 62 Newton Street, WALTHAM on Tuesday morning July 7th at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in the Marist Missionary Sisters Lot at Saint Patrick’s Cemetery in Watertown. Visiting Hours will be held prior to the Funeral Mass in the Marist Missionary Sisters Residence on Tuesday morning from 8:30am-10:00am.
