Of Waltham, passed away tragically as a result of a house fire early Monday morning February 16th, 2015 at the age of 75.
Born on September 4, 1939 in Medford; beloved daughter of the late Arthur and Helen (Curcio) Lohnes, Betty was raised in Medford and moved to Waltham in 1967 where she has lived ever since.
Betty was employed as a Hematologist with the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children's Hospital for over 20 years.
She was a member of the Civil Air Patrol.
Known to everyone in her southside neighborhood home as "MA", caring for others was the fabric of her life. She had a passion for cooking and baking especially cookies and cakes. Any family event or just any day you walked into her home she was baking specially designed cookies for each and every occasion.
Betty grew up as a kid at Revere Beach and found her happiness reading at the Waltham Public Library or sitting in her car at the "Cove" section of Norumbega Park.
The single most important aspect of her life was family especially the love, devotion and care she provided to her grandson Ryan.
During her difficult illness in these past few years her loving son Eric devoted his life and provided her care to allow his mother to stay in her home throughout her illness.
She is survived by her devoted & loving children Liz Miller-Gartz and her husband James of Hopedale and Greg Miller and his wife the late Joanne of Watertown, her cherished grandchildren Amanda Nichole Miller and her Fiance’ Michael Matterazzo of Framingham, Ryan and Jeremy Gartz of Hopedale, and her dear brother Thomas Lohnes and his wife Ida of Billerica and lifelong friends Judy Sullivan and Fr. Anthony.

Relatives & Friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Service in celebration of Elizabeth’s Life in the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco & Sons Memorial, 773 Moody St, WALTHAM on Thursday afternoon Feb. 26th at 1:30 p.m. Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. Parking attendants will be on duty.
