Obituary for Joseph L. Burgoyne Jr.

Of Waltham died Wednesday evening at the Maristhill Nursing home after a long illness.

Born in Waltham, he has been a life long resident here. He was the former CEO and President of Ideal Concrete Block Company of Waltham and Westford, Massachusetts. Joe served at the helm for over 40 years before transferring the stewardship of the company to his sons, Joseph III, John and Jim as did his father to him and his brother Jim.

Joe, was an industry leader and pioneer during his tenure who introduced a number of production and product innovations within the industry. Buildings through-out the Boston area and surrounding communities were built with block ideal manufactured and supplied.

In 1975 his company was one of the first in the nation to produce concrete pavers and his vision placed Ideal at the fore front of the concrete paver industry. A decade later, he recognized the need for segmental retaining walls and these products remain today to be a part of the core offering of the company. Over the years Joe was an active member of many industry associations that included among others The National& New England Concrete Masonry Associations, the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute.

Joe was known for his love of family and Community, and a man who always found time to give back. He served on the Waltham Hospital Building Committee, The Rosary Academy, The Hundred Club of Massachusetts, and an ardent supporter of numerous community organizations and was one of the founding sponsors of Waltham Babe Ruth Baseball. Dugouts for many of the baseball leagues through-out Waltham were built with Ideal Concrete Block he donated. Mr Burgoyne served with the United States Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict.

His love for the Sea and Boating allowed him a favorite pastime of Fishing and spending time on the sea. He was the son of the late Joseph L. & Jane (Hedrington ) Burgoyne Sr., brother of the late James E. Burgoyne & Pauline Sanford.

He was the husband of the late Mary Rose ( McLaughlin ) Burgoyne. He is survived by his children Ms Jane Burgoyne, Mrs Mary Anne Gemma and her husband Marco, Margaret Anne Bulger and her husband John all of Waltham, Joseph L. Burgoyne III., and his wife Patricia of Waltham, John V. Burgoyne and his wife “Ginni” of Westford, James M. Burgoyne and his wife Bernice of Nashua, N.H., his sisters Mary T. Burgoyne of Waltham, Jean Newcomb of Norwood, Georgine Brouliette of Townsend & Geraldine Smith of Florida. In addition he leaves 9 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren, and many Nieces & Nephews.

Services will be held Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. from the Brasco & Sons Memorial, 773 Moody Street, Waltham with a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Mary’s Church, 145 School Street, Waltham at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the family lot at Calvary Cemetery, Waltham. Visiting Hours will be at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-8 p.m.
