Obituary for Paul Vincent Devlin

Paul Vincent Devlin
Of Georgetown, MA & Drakes Island, Maine, formerly of Lexington passed away peacefully Sunday evening December 14th, 2014 surrounded by his loving family at his home in Drakes Island, Maine at the age of 90.

Born on March 12, 1924 in Worcester; beloved son of the late John Joseph Devlin and Margaret Sarah (Gannon) Devlin, Paul was raised in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston. He moved his family following employment transfers to Syracuse New York, Newington Connecticut and Arlington before settling in Lexington in 1961 where he resided with his family until 1992 when he moved to Georgetown, MA and Drakes Island, Maine.

A graduate of Commerce High School with the Class of 1941, Paul was employed as a Drill Press Operator at Pratt Whitney Aircraft in Hartford, Connecticut before entering the United States Army Air Force.

Paul served proudly as an Airplane and Engine Mechanic with the United States Army Air Force from October 1942 to February 1946 during World War II.
After the war Paul earned his Associate Degree in Business from Boston University in 1955 attending Night School for 8 years on the G.I. Bill.

He worked as an Accountant and Controller for a variety of companies for over 25 years. In 1976 he started his own business, M.D.O.S., providing home oxygen for people with respiratory issues. It was with genuine compassion and warmth that he met the needs of his customers, listening to their concerns, responding with timely visits and a cheerful presence. He worked his business until his retirement.

Beloved husband for 41 years to the late Mary Bernadette (Melly) Devlin whom he married on in 1949 and predeceased him in 1991. His life was focused on providing for and enjoying his family. It was with great pride that he supported and participated in the events of his children and grandchildren, never missing a birthday celebration or a graduation.

He is survived by his loving and devoted children Paul Vincent Devlin, Jr. of Lexington, Mary Devlin Fredrickson and her husband Peter Fredrickson of South Weymouth, Eileen Devlin MacPherson and her husband Waltham Police Chief Keith MacPherson of Waltham, Kathleen Devlin of Stow, Patriscia Devlin Puopolo and her husband Francis Puopolo of Georgetown, Massachusetts State Police Lieutenant James Devlin of Danvers, and Massachusetts State Police Trooper Thomas Devlin and his wife Nancy Peterson Devlin of Wilmington, his cherished grandchildren Joshua Fredrickson and his wife Kyla Graves, Brian Fredrickson, Ian MacPherson and his wife Lauren, Waltham Police Officer Kaitlyn MacPherson, Erin Smith and her husband Andrew, Daniel, Ryan and Devin MacPherson, Holly Anne Palmer and her husband Josh, Henry Ruggiero and his wife Carly, Casey Ruggiero, Michael Puopolo and his wife Kara, Christine Puopolo, Massachusetts State Police Dispatcher Stephanie Devlin, Brent Osinski, Matthew, Rachel, Paul and Hannah Devlin, and his adored great grandchildren Issac Palmer, Gannon MacPherson and Crosby Ruggiero. In addition he is survived by 21 nieces & nephews. Dear brother of the late Leo Devlin.

He was a Democrat who paid attention to state and national politics and voted in every election up to the end of his life when he submitted an absentee ballot.
In his last decades he travelled extensively. He drove across the country in a converted van, revisiting his military locations and family who had relocated. He travelled to New York, Florida, New Orleans, California and Seattle to share important events with family. He especially enjoyed his three tours of Ireland on the State Police Family trips, accompanied by his children and grandchildren.

He loved spending time at the beach, especially when accompanied by family members of all ages. Family homes at Drakes Island in Maine became a treasured haven for him for the past 18 years where he enjoyed puttering and became the onsite project manager overseeing yard work and improvements. He encouraged family to enjoy the Maine coast with him and he chaired the daily 4pm Porch Committee Meetings with his neighbors. He had worked hard for a lifetime and he spent his later years relaxing in the company of friends and family.

A very religious man, he actively attended the Catholic Church in every community where he lived. Joined by his loved ones, despite failing health, he always attended the 8 am Sunday Mass. The only Mass that he missed was the Sunday that he left us to be with our Mom.

Relatives & Friends are respectfully invited to attend Funeral Services from the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco & Sons, 773 Moody Street, WALTHAM on Friday morning Dec. 19th at 8:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Paul’s Life at Saint Brigid’s Church, 2001 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington at 10:00 a.m. Interment with United States Army Military Honors will follow at Westview Cemetery in Lexington.
