Of West Newton, passed away late Saturday evening August 30th, 2014 surrounded by her loving family in her home after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 68.
Born on May 13, 1946 in Waltham; daughter of the late Daniel and Frances (Frada) Mazzola, Mary was a lifelong resident of Newton.
Mary was employed as the Accounts Receivable Manager for Veterans Transportation until her retirement. She had worked for several years in the former Waltham Hospital Coffee Shop.
The central focus of Mary’s life was her family, especially her grandchildren. Her regular Sunday dinner was a requirement for the family to gather. In her spare time she enjoyed bowling in a league in Cambridge, playing bocce at the Watertown Sons of Italy, and traveling the world - but her favorite place was Las Vegas.
She was an active and devoted member of “Athletes Unlimited” the Newton area Special Olympics program and a member of the Watertown Sons of Italy Cornelia dei Gracchi Ladies Lodge.
Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years (Ret.) Newton Firefighter Richard E. Grinley, her loving & devoted children Tracy A. Sweet and her husband Edward T. Sweet of Waltham, R. Scott Grinley and his wife Kelly A. (King) Grinley of Westwood and Matthew W. Grinley of Newton, her cherished grandchildren Meredith, Matthew, Alivia, Ava and Ainsley, and her dear siblings Geraldine Cimino of Wellesley, Donna Mazzola of Newton, Daniel Mazzola of Wellesley, Frances Cormier of Newton and Joseph Mazzola of Framingham. In addition she is survived by nearly a 100 cherished nieces & nephews who will miss her dearly.
Relatives & Friends are respectfully invited to attend Funeral Services from the Brasco & Sons Memorial Chapels, 773 Moody Street, WALTHAM on Thursday morning Sept. 4th at 9:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Mary’s Life at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington Street, Newton at 10:30 a.m. Committal Services will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Waltham. Visiting Hours will be held in the Funeral Home on Wednesday Sept. 3rd from 4 – 8 p.m. Parking attendants will be available.
