Obituary for John Paul McGovern

Of Waltham, passed away Monday evening August 25th, 2014 at his residence in Waltham Crossings at the age of 83.

Born on May 16, 1931 in Waltham; son of the late John B. McGovern and Kathleen (Delaney) McGovern, John was a lifelong resident of Waltham.

A graduate of Waltham High School with the Class of 1949, John furthered his education graduating with the Class of 1953 from Bowdoin College with a Degree in Economics.

After his graduation John served proudly with the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1955.

John was employed with the Department of Defense as a Contract Administer.

He was a an avid sports fan and enjoyed listening to music. John was an associate and mentor for the Friends of Bill W for over 35 years.

He is survived by his loving daughters Kathleen Farr and her husband Robert of Melrose, Maura McGovern Solca’ and her husband Federico of Switzerland, Margaret McGovern and her husband Mark Larouche of Boxford, and Jane McGovern Nadeau and her husband Michael of North Reading and his dear siblings William McGovern of Auburn, ME., Joan McGovern of Nashua, NH, and Gerald McGovern of Weston. In addition he is survived by 11 cherished grandchildren and many nieces & nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of John’s Life was held private for his family at Saint Julia’s Church in Weston followed by a burial with United States Marine Corps Military Honors at Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory for combined scholastic and athletic achievement to the John P. McGovern Memorial Scholarship Fund, with checks payable to Waltham High School, c/o Principal Gregory Demeo, 617 Lexington Street, Waltham, MA 02452.

The Brasco & Sons Memorial Chapels of WALTHAM assisted the family with arrangements.
